I am probably not the only member of the LGBT community to turn on the television last night so I could see for myself if Work It was as offensive as I had been reading. Let me start with - This show will likely get stripped from the networks for poor ratings before it has time to be offensive to anyone other than my eyes and ears....
It is a horrible show...not because I found it offensive but because it just is...For some reason this season it seems that networks are trying to draw straight men in as an audience -- Hence, Man Up, Last Man Standing (which is actually a funny family oriented comedy and maybe Tim Allen's best work since Home Improvement), How to Be a Gentleman -- I am neither a man nor have any knowledge about what men watch on TV...all of the men I know solely watch the news or ESPN. Maybe that's gender stereotyping on my part or I only know stereotypical straight men...I remain convinced that my step-father would be a huge fan of Last Man Standing but he cannot pull his eyes away from Bill O'Reilly and the other talking heads long enough to watch an episode...
I get this is mid-season so the B-Side is getting some play (although I find nothing B-Side about Are You There, Chelsea)...But ABC was Work It the best out there for mid-season pick up? The theme of unemployment is very timely...and there are a lot more women in the work force than there were 20 years ago...and a husband learning about how his wife feels through the eyes of a woman is a sweet concept but the show as a whole just did not work for me. I've seen better drag at an amateur show in rural South Carolina...and this is the best ABC could do? I guess I don't find the men believable as women maybe I'm not supposed to - Who is not going to notice that the man in the skirt is in fact a man? Although, I love John Caparulo and would probably writhe on the floor in a fit of laughter if his part lands him in a twin set and pumps. The premise of the show would work better for me if it were 5 minutes sketch on SNL but a whole series of pretending that there is no giant Ace Bandage in the middle of the room? The big penis in the room points to NO... Is the show offensive to transgendered people? Well if transgendered people are offended by it then I suppose it is...I didn't find it mocking of transgendered people last night...Some women might be offended...or feel empowered...as there were even some feminist undertones but I'm not sure what they were going with...There have been many gender bending women in movies trying to get ahead in a man's world...so let us suppose men think it is becoming a woman's world...Would they get a "man movement"?...Probably not, I think that would fall under the Twitter hashtag #whitepeopleproblems
These two are not the first down on their luck guys to wear a dress on prime-time TV...Bosom Buddies was about two men who dressed as women so they could live in the only apartment they could afford...I guess we were a less PC world in the early 80s...And I've never heard any disparaging remarks about Tom Hanks because he dressed like a lady...and at least the guys on Work It have nice wigs...but Tom Hanks did have a better figure for a dress.
So I am not boycotting the show...But won't watch it unless it's on Hulu and I can't sleep and have memorized every episode of The Office.
